BIO Asia–Taiwan 2026 showcases Taiwan’s global biotech ambitions through AI and partnerships

Bringing together policymakers, scientists, investors and healthcare innovators from around the world, BIO Asia–Taiwan 2026 underscored Taiwan's determination to transform its biotechnology sector into a globally connected engine of innovation powered by AI, precision medicine and international collaboration.

Taiwan positions biotech at the center of national competitiveness

Taipei became a focal point for Asia's biotechnology industry as BIO Asia–Taiwan 2026 convened from July 16 to 19, drawing thousands of participants from across the global life sciences ecosystem.

Held under the theme "Asian Inspiration, Global Impact," the annual gathering brought together government leaders, multinational pharmaceutical companies, startups, venture capital firms, academic institutions and medical experts, reflecting Taiwan's growing prominence as both an innovation hub and a strategic partner in global healthcare.

The four-day event extended beyond a conventional trade exhibition. Discussions ranged from artificial intelligence in medicine and precision healthcare to supply chain resilience, cross-border investment and emerging therapeutic technologies, highlighting how biotechnology has become intertwined with national competitiveness and economic development.

Opening the conference, Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) described biotechnology as no longer solely a healthcare industry but a strategic pillar capable of enhancing Taiwan's national competitiveness.

He stated that Taiwan's biotechnology industry must simultaneously strengthen domestic capabilities while embracing international cooperation.

"Taiwan's biomedical technologies should not only flourish domestically and expand globally, but also connect with the world's most advanced technologies," Cho said, adding that the government would continue working with industry, academia and international partners to deepen innovation and realize President Lai Ching-te's (賴清德) vision of a "Healthy Taiwan."

Taiwans government bets on AI-driven biotech growth

The government aims to attract more than NT$100 billion (approximately US$3.1 billion) in additional biotechnology investment by 2030, while integrating biotechnology into Taiwan's broader industrial strategy.

A cornerstone of that vision is the government's "Chip-based Industrial Innovation Taiwan" initiative, which seeks to leverage Taiwan's semiconductor leadership by combining AI, high-performance computing and biomedical research.

Cho stated that the objective is to accelerate precision medicine, improve healthcare efficiency, shorten biotechnology development timelines, and strengthen Taiwan's digital health infrastructure.

The figures cited by Cho illustrated the sector's growing momentum. Taiwan's biotechnology and medical industry attracted NT$55 billion in investment in 2025, while total industry revenue reached NT$805 billion, indicating that sustained public investment has begun generating tangible economic returns.

The government also outlined healthcare objectives alongside industrial expansion. By 2028, Taiwan aims to reduce hospitalization and emergency admission rates to 7.5%, while substantially expanding the collection of critical patient data to strengthen cancer research and evidence-based clinical decision-making.

During a July 17 visit to the exhibition, Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) described Taiwan’s biotechnology sector as one of the country’s key strategic industries and praised its progress in recent years.

Hsiao expressed hope that Taiwan would continue strengthening international trust in and recognition of the Taiwan brand while deepening ties between Taiwan’s life sciences industry and global markets.

International collaboration takes center stage

The conference's international focus was one of its defining features.

Delegations from Europe, North America and across the Asia-Pacific gathered in Taipei to explore research partnerships, investment opportunities and regulatory cooperation.

Multiple forums focused on building resilient healthcare systems amid geopolitical uncertainty, underscoring that biomedical innovation increasingly depends on international networks rather than isolated national efforts.

Among the notable developments was a deepening biotechnology dialogue between Taiwan and Poland. Companies from both sides signed cooperation agreements at the Poland–Taiwan Biotechnology Forum on July 17.

Other conference sessions at the BIO Asia–Taiwan 2026 examined healthcare resilience, advanced therapeutics, regenerative medicine, digital health and next-generation drug development, reflecting the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of modern biotechnology.

Exhibitors repeatedly highlighted Taiwan's advantages beyond manufacturing, pointing to its integrated ecosystem encompassing world-class semiconductor capabilities, advanced hospitals, comprehensive health data, strong biomedical research and an increasingly vibrant startup community.

AI and precision medicine

AI emerged as one of the conference's dominant themes.

Speakers including former president of Taiwan’s Academia Sinica Wong Chi-huey (翁啟惠) and Insilico Medicine CEO Alex Zhavoronkov, explored how AI is transforming nearly every stage of biomedical innovation, from accelerating drug research and development, improving clinical diagnostics, assisting antibody optimization technology and low-sugar vaccines, to enabling personalized treatments and optimizing hospital operations.

Taiwan's globally recognized high-tech industry featured prominently throughout these discussions. Rather than viewing chips and biotechnology as separate sectors, participants increasingly described them as complementary strengths capable of reinforcing one another.

The convergence of computing power, medical imaging, genomic sequencing and large-scale health data could position Taiwan as an important testbed for next-generation precision medicine, particularly as AI models become increasingly sophisticated.

Building Taiwan's place in the global biotech landscape

BIO Asia–Taiwan 2026 demonstrated that Taiwan's biotechnology ambitions now extend well beyond contract manufacturing or niche research.

Instead, the event projected Taiwan as a platform where advanced manufacturing, AI, medical research and international collaboration intersect. Government efforts to attract investment and deepen global partnerships, combined with Taiwan's technological expertise, reflect a long-term strategy to elevate Taiwan's role within the global life sciences value chain.

As biotechnology becomes ever more central to economic resilience and public health, BIO Asia–Taiwan 2026 suggested that Taiwan intends to be not merely a participant in the global life sciences industry, but one of its crucial players.
