At SEMICON Taiwan 2026, Taiwan’s leaders and international partners cast the island’s semiconductor industry not merely as a manufacturing powerhouse, but as an increasingly indispensable node in the global effort to build a more resilient and trusted technology ecosystem.From semiconductor powerhouse to global connectorSEMICON Taiwan 2026, held Sept. 2-4 at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center, unfolded against a semiconductor industry being reshaped by AI, geopolitical rivalry and the imperative to diversify supply chains.The scale of this year’s exhibition underscored Taiwan’s centrality to that transformation. More than 1,300 companies from 65 countries occupied 4,300 booths, making the event the largest in its history. The programme placed particular emphasis on advanced manufacturing, advanced packaging, AI, memory and silicon photonics.President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) used the occasion to argue that Taiwan’s semiconductor strength rests on more than technological prowess.Speaking at the Semicon Network Summit on Sept. 1, one day before the exhibition opened, Lai said Taiwan’s semiconductor industry was the product of global division of labour and long-term cooperation.Over decades, he said, Taiwan had built a complete semiconductor cluster with fast, flexible and highly efficient manufacturing capabilities, while earning the trust of international partners through reliable supply and adherence to its commitments.Lai also highlighted the industry’s increasingly global footprint. He pointed to TSMC’s additional investment in the US and its progress in Japan, as well as the company’s participation in the Dresden fab in Germany, saying Taiwan’s semiconductor strengths were creating new industrial links around the world.Such connections, he said, could allow countries to cooperate more closely in research and production, support one another and diversify risks in the face of natural disasters, pandemics and geopolitical shifts. (Office of the President) US Undersecretary of State for Economic Affairs Jacob Helberg likewise framed semiconductors as foundational to AI leadership, defence and the global economy.Helberg said, in a prerecorded video, at the same summit that highly concentrated supply chains are vulnerable and need to be more resilient.He pointed to the Pax Silica initiative as an effort to construct a network of trusted partners around secure technology and reliable supply chains.Helberg urged Taiwan to sustain investment in cutting-edge technologies while deepening ties among trusted economies.Washington and Taipei deepen their partnershipThe strategic dimension was particularly visible at the US Pavilion, one of a record 19 national pavilions at this year’s exhibition.Raymond Greene, director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) and the de facto US ambassador, described the US-Taiwan semiconductor partnership as stronger than ever, spanning research, chip design, materials, equipment and manufacturing through advanced packaging, logistics, cybersecurity and workforce development.As AI transforms the global economy, he said, the partnership would become still more important to shared prosperity, resilience and technological leadership. (TCN) Eric Frater, acting deputy director and the economic section chief at AIT, said at a Sept. 4 forum that the rapid evolution of AI was in many respects the culmination of decades of innovation in the semiconductor industry.Through the Pax Silica framework, he said, the United States and Taiwan are working together to advance the AI revolution while deepening their ties in advanced computing infrastructure, critical supply chains and trusted technology standards.The partnership is now moving into a more complex frontier, Frater said, as physical and agentic AI begin to bridge software, robotics and autonomous systems with the physical world.The promise of these technologies lies in their ability to interact with people safely and intuitively and become embedded in everyday life. Physical AI, in particular, could bring intelligence into advanced robotics, autonomous mobility and smart manufacturing.Frater added that such applications are also creating new avenues for US-Taiwan technological cooperation, with Taiwan well positioned to draw on its strengths in robotics and automation as embodied AI moves from concept toward real-world deployment. SEMI, the global industry association that organizes SEMICON events, said frontier AI training compute is expanding four- to fivefold annually, making power consumption and data movement increasingly consequential.The event therefore spotlighted system-level integration through dedicated platforms for AI chip design, high-bandwidth memory and silicon photonics.Micron’s Scott DeBoer offered a particularly stark assessment, warning at SEMICON Taiwan on Sept. 2 that global AI infrastructure remains “massively undersupplied” and arguing that software and architectural efficiencies cannot substitute for expanding physical memory capacity.His remarks underscored the increasingly consequential constraints around memory, HBM, advanced packaging and thermal management as AI infrastructure scales.For Stéphane Péden, general manager of the French Chamber Taiwan, the challenges reinforce the necessity of international collaboration. Taiwan’s high-quality manufacturing and advanced packaging capabilities, Europe’s expertise in photonics and materials, and US strengths in design and innovation could complement one another, he wrote, adding that no nation could develop resilience in the field of semiconductors on its own.He stated that silicon photonics, in particular, illustrates how such cooperation could deliver faster speeds, greater bandwidth and lower energy consumption.He concluded that Taiwan is in a distinctive position to “connect research, industry, and government worldwide” which could help turn new ideas into real-world solutions.That may ultimately be SEMICON Taiwan’s most consequential message: in an industry increasingly defined by AI and geopolitical fragmentation, technological leadership is becoming less about one country’s dominance than about how effectively trusted partners can connect their respective strengths.
